Life-Line

2022 | 29min

Synopsis:

Sci-Fi/Drama.  Set in 1939, an obscure scientist builds a machine that can tell the exact date of someone's death, but clashes with life insurance companies trying to discredit him to protect their bottom line.

Director's Statement:

Based on the debut short story by Robert A. Heinlein, "Life-Line" is a throwback to the golden age of science fiction.  A contemplative piece throwing unusual circumstances into the lives of ordinary people.  Stylistically reminiscent of classic science fiction such as The Twilight Zone (1959and Destination Moon (1950)

Set during the tail end of the great depression, when most Americans barley owned the clothes on their back, Dr. Pinero scrapes together and presents his life's work, but is scoffed at by those wanting to keep the status quo.  Pinero is an outsider, someone without the power to fight back against the institutions that mean to exclude him, but he will not be ignored.  Who does technological progress benefit?  Who should it benefit?

Robert Heinlein is regarded as one of the most influential science fiction authors in history, and this is the first adaptations of his work since Predestination (2014) and Starship Troopers (1997).  I am extremally honored to be one of the few filmmakers able to play in Heinlein's extensive sandbox and interact with his ideas in a new medium.
